NATIONAL FOREST INVENTORY

The National Forest Inventory is a project aimed at obtaining as much information as possible on the situation, ownership and protection regime, nature, legal status, probable evolution and productive capacity of all kinds of goods in Spanish forests.

The basic work unit is the province and, as it is a continuous inventory, the same measurements are repeated every 10 years, covering the entire national territory in each ten-year cycle.

The IV National Forest Inventory reveals that there were hardly any changes in the forest area in the last 12 years. Galicia has just over 2 million hectares of forest area, 70% of which is wooded (considering a wooded area when it has at least 10% tree cover (Fcc>=10%) and 30% of which is occupied by scattered trees The Galician forest has 600,000 hectares that are unproductive.

The increase of 30% in the stocks of wood from the Galician forest stands out, due to the increase in the size of the existing stands. The IV National Forest Inventory highlights the aging of the Galician forest and its state of health that is getting worse.
